Safety Information


Serious blood problems including low levels of red or white blood cells can occur with the use of zidovudine.  You should contact your doctor if you develop unusual fatigue, pale skin, sore throat, fever or chills, as these may be signs of blood problems.  Lactic acidosis and severe liver problems have been reported with the use of Combivir.  Symptoms of this include nausea, vomiting, unusual stomach discomfort, weakness, shortness of breath, weakness in the arms and legs, yellowing of the skin or eyes or pain in the upper stomach area.  Serious cases of pancreatitis have been reported in the use of Combivir.  Symptoms of pancreatitis are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain and fever.  

Side Effects


Some serious side effects can occur while taking Combivir such as:


  • Mild nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Decreased appetite
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Insomnia
  • Redistribution of body fat
  • Bone Marrow problems
  • Myopathy
  • Lactic acidosis

An allergic reaction to Combivir is characterized by:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Closing of the throat
  • Swelling of the lips, tongue or face
  • Hives

Combivir Contraindications


Drugs that can change effects of Lamivudine:

  • Trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole
  • Nelfinavir

Drugs that can change the effects of Zidovudine:


  • Atovaquone
  • Fluconazole
  • Methadone
  • Nelfinavir
  • Probenecid
  • Ritonavir
  • Valproic acid
