Safety Information


A condition called lactic acidosis, which can be fatal, has been reported with the use of reverse transcriptase inhibitors.  You should contact your doctor if you experience nausea, vomiting or unusual stomach pains, weakness, shortness of breath, yellowing of the skin or eyes.  Serious cases of pancreatitis have been reported with the use of Epivir. 

Seek emergency medical attention if you suffer an alergic reaction to Epivir.   Symptoms of this are: difficulty breathing, closing of the throat, swelling of the face, lips tongue and hives.

Epivir Side Effects


Some of the less serious side effects that may occur are:

  • Headache
  • Fever and Chills
  • Malaise, Fatigue
  • Insomnia
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea, Vomiting, Diarrhea
  • Decreased Appetite
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Skin Rash
  • Dyspepsia
  • Depression

There also may be a redistribution of body fat in which fat from the arms, legs and face may be decreased and the fat in the neck, breast and trunk may be increased.

Epivir Contraindications


The following drugs can interact adversely or change the effectivness of Epivir and should be avoided:

  • Efavirenz/emtricitabine/tenofovir
  • Emtricitabine
  • Emtricitabine/tenofovir
  • Interferon alfa 2b/ribavirin
  • Ribavirin
  • Trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole
  • Zalcitabine
