Safety Information


You should stop taking Kaletra and seek emergency medical attention if you experience an allergic reaction, pancreatitis or liver problems.  The symptoms of an allergic reaction are : difficulty breathing, closing of the throat, swelling of the lips tongue or face, and hives.  The symptoms of pancreatitis are nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

Do not use this medication if you are allergic to ritonavir (Norvir), or if you are using any of the following drugs:

  • astemizole (Hismanal)
  • terfenadine (Seldane)
  • cisapride (Propulsid)
  • midazolam (Versed) or triazolam (Halcion)
  • pimozide (Orap)
  • ergotamine (Ergomar, Ergostat, Cafergot, Ercaf, Wigraine)
  • dihydroergotamine (D.H.E. 45, Migranal Nasal Spray)
  • ergonovine (Ergotrate)
  • methylergonovine (Methergine).

Serious medical problems or death can occur if you are taking any of these medications with Kaletra.

Kaletra Side Effects


Some other, less serious side effects that can occur are:


  • Diarrhea or abnormal stools
  • Nausea
  • Tiredness
  • Weakness
  • Dizziness
  • Skin Rash
  • Changes in blood sugar levels
  • Changes in triglyceride or cholesterol levels
  • Re-distribution of body fat

Talk to your doctor if you experience any other symptoms not listed here.

Kaletra Contraindications



The following drugs can interact adversely or change the effectiveness of Kaletra and should be avoided:

  • Viagra, Levitra, Cialis
  • St. John’s wort
  • Rifabutin
  • Rifampin
  • Warfarin, Dilantin, Tegretol, Luminal, Solfoton
  • Cyclosporine
  • Tacrolimus
  • Sirolimus
  • Methadone
  • Dexamethasone
  • Advair, Flonase, Flovent, Cutivate
  • Trazodone
  • Insulin or diabetes medication taken by mouth
  • Cholesterol medication such as Lipitor, Zocor, Pravachol
  • Amlodipine, Felodipine, nicardipine, nifedipine
  • Nimodipine, nisoldipine


HIV medicines such as: amprenavir (Agenerase), efavirenz (Sustiva, Atripla), delavirdine (Rescriptor), didanosine (Videx), indinavir (Crixivan), saquinavir (Invirase), fosamprenavir (Lexiva), ritonavir (Norvir), atazanavir (Reyataz), nelfinavir (Viracept), nevirapine (Viramune), or tenofovir (Viread, Truvada).

Heart rhythm medication such as: amidarone, bepridil, quinidine
Antibiotics such as metronidazole, erythromycin, clairithromycin, clindamycin, ketoconazole, itraconazole, voriconazole
