What Is Rescriptor?


Rescriptor is an antiviral medication in a class of drugs called non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors.  It inhibits HIV’s ability to reproduce in the body.

How does Rescriptor Work?


When HIV infects the cells in a person’s body, it copies its genetic code into the cell’s DNA.  This programs the cell to create new copies of the virus.  The genetic material is in the form of RNA.  HIV must first convert its RNA to DNA using the reverse transcriptase enzyme.  Rescriptor attaches themselves to reverse transcriptase and prevents HIV from converting its RNA to DNA.

Does Rescriptor Cure HIV/AIDS?


Rescriptor will not cure HIV infection or AIDS.  Many people who use Rescriptor will get opportunistic infections such as herpes, pneumonia or mycobacterium avium complex.  These and other conditions happen when the immune system is damaged.  Anyone on antiviral medication should see their doctor regularly.

You should contact your doctor to see if Rescriptor is right for you.  Rescriptor should not be taken by anyone allergic to its ingredients.

What should I discuss with my healthcare provider?


Before taking Rescriptor you should tell your doctor if you have:

  • Liver disease or liver problems
  • Achlorhydria (lack of stomach acid)

It is not known whether Rescriptor will be harmful to a fetus.  It is important to treat HIV/AIDS during pregnancy to reduce the chance of infecting the baby.  Talk to your doctor about treatment options.  Mothers who are HIV positive should not breast feed as they could pass the virus to their baby through infected breast milk.

Using Rescriptor


Always take Rescriptor exactly as your doctor prescribed, do not change the dose without consulting a healthcare professional.  Each dose should be taken with a full glass of water, with or without food.  If you have achlorhydria (decreased stomach acid) then your doctor may recommend that you take Rescriptor with an acidic drink like orange juice.  It is important that you do not miss any doses of Rescriptor.  If you do miss a dose then take it immediately, unless it is almost time for your next dose.  They you can just skip the missed dose and take your current dose.
