Retrovir Safety Information


Inform your doctor if you have any of the following conditions:

  • Kidney Disease
  • Liver Disease
  • Pancrease disorder
  • Muscle problems

Retrovir can lower the blood cells in the body and can make it easier for a person to bleed from an injury or get sick from others who are ill.  Your doctor will need to monitor your blood with tests on a regular basis.

Contact your doctor if you have liver problems while on Retrovir.  Symptoms of liver problems are: stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, low fever, lost appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools or jaundice (yellowing of eyes or skin).

Retrovir Side Effects


Get emergency medical attention if you have any signs of an allergic reaction such as:
hives, swelling of face, lips, tongue, throat or difficulty breathing.

Contact your doctor immediately if you have any of the following serious, possibly life-threatening side effects:


Lactic acidosis – Muscle pain, weakness, numb, tingling feeling, with nausea and vomiting

Signs of an infection – fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms, easy bruising or bleeding, unusual weakness, pail skin, white patches or sore in mouth or on lips.

Less serious side effect may be more likely to occur.  Continue to take Retrovir and call your doctor if you have any of the following side effects:


  • Redistribution of body fat (changes in arms, legs, face, neck, breasts)
  • Headache
  • Sleep problems
  • Mild nausea, vomiting
  • Constipation, stomach pain
  • Pain or irritation at injection site
  • Eye twitching, uncontrolled movements
  • Lack of balance
