Safety Information


Using Sustiva can cause serious psychiatric side effects in some people.  Contact your doctor if you develop any of the following symptoms:

  • Severe Depression
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Aggressive behavior
  • Paranoia
  • Manic reactions

Sustiva may cause drowsiness or dizziness so use caution when driving or operating machinery.  Avoid using alcohol while on Sustiva as it may increase some side effects.

Sustiva Side Effects


If you develop signs of an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, swelling in the face, lips tongue or throat) get emergency medical help.  Stop taking Sustiva and call your doctor if you develop a rash.

Keep taking Sustiva and contact your doctor if you develop any of the following less serious side effects:

  • Drowsiness, Dizziness
  • Insomnia, abnormal dreams
  • Impaired concentration
  • Agitation
  • Nervousness
  • Headache
  • Mild nausea, vomiting or diarrhea
  • Redistribution of body fat (loss of fat in arms, legs and face.  Increase in back, neck, breast and trunk)

Sustiva Contraindications


Talk to you doctor before taking any of the following medications.  Sustiva may cause serious, life-threatening side effects if taken with any of the following drugs:

  • Cisapride (Propulsid)
  • Astemizole (Hismanal
  • terfenadine (Seldane)
  • midazolam (Versed)
  • triazolam (Halcion)
  • ergotamine (Ergostat, Ergomar, and others)
  • dihydroergotamine (D.H.E. 45)

The following medications may require a strength or dosage adjustment while taking Sustiva:


  • Crixivan
  • Norvir
  • Invirase
  • Fortovase
  • Coumadin
  • Biaxin
  • Mycobutin
  • Rifadin
  • Rimactane
