Safety Information


There have been reports of serious, sometimes fatal hypersensitivity reactions while taking Trizivir. 

Symptoms of this condition include: fever, rash, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, achiness, and cough.  Stop taking Trizivir and contact your doctor if hypersensitivity is suspected.      

Patients who start taking Trizivir after stopping can develop hypersensitivity even though they had no symptoms before stopping.

Lactic Acidosis and Severe Hepatomegaly have been reported with the use of Trizivir. 

Symptoms of this include: fatigue, nausea with vomiting, pain in the abdomen, weight loss, shortness of breath, muscle weakness, yellowing of the skin or eyes. If these symptoms happen then contact a doctor right away.

Trizivir Side Effects


Some patients on Trizivir have developed blood problems, characterized by fatigue, pale skin, sore throat, fever or chills.  If these symptoms occur then contact your doctor immediately.  

Less serious side effects that can occur are:


  • Mild nausea with vomiting, diarrhea or decreased appetite
  • Headache
  • Tiredness
  • Joint or muscle pain
  • Dizziness
  • Insomnia
  • Redistribution of body fat

Trizivir Contraindications


Inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medications:


  • Amphotericin B
  • Antineoplastics (cancer medicine)
  • Azathioprine (Imuran)
  • Chloramphenicol (Chloromycetin)
  • Clozapine (Clozaril)
  • Colchicine
  • Didanosine (Videx)
  • Eflornithine (Ornidyl)
  • Flucytosine (Ancobon)
  • Ganciclovir (Cytovene)
  • Interferon (Intron A, Roferon-A)
  • Abacavir (Ziagen)
  • Lamivudine (Epivir)
  • Zidovudine (Retrovir)
  • Doxorubicin (Adriamycin)
  • Ribavirin (Virazole)
  • Stavudine (Zerit)
