What is Viread?

Viread is an antiviral drugs that is used to treat HIV infection.  It is in a class of drugs called nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors.  It prevents HIV from reproducing in the body.

How does Viread work?

Nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTI’s) prevent HIV from altering the genetic material of healthy T-cells.  This prevents the cells from make new viruses.  Viread is similar to nucleoside analogues like Retrovir however they require less processing in the body to become active.

Viread will not prevent the transmission of HIV through unprotected sex or shareing needles.

Will Viread Cure AIDS?

Viread is not a cure for AIDS or HIV infection.  Many people who take Viread still get opportunistic infections (OI’s) like pneumonia, herpes and bacteria infections.  These conditions happen when your immune system has been compromised by HIV.

Is Viread Right for you?

A doctor or healthcare professional should be consulted to help decide the right treatment options for HIV infection.  Do not take Viread if you are allergic to any of its ingredients.

The active ingredient is: tenofovir disoproxil fumarate

The inactive ingredients are: croscarmellose sodium, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, pregelatinized starch, FD&C blue #2, aluminum lake, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose 2910, lactose monohydrate, titanium dioxide and triacetin.

What should I discuss with my healthcare provider?

Inform your doctor if you have any of the following conditions, as you may need a dosage adjustment or special tests:

  • Liver or kidney disease
  • Any bone problems
  • Hepatitis B infection
  • Pregnant or planning on becoming pregnant

Viread is not expected to harm a fetus but HIV can be passed to the baby if the mother is not treated properly during pregnancy and labor.  Mothers should not breast feed as they may pass HIV to the child through infected breast milk.

Using Viread

It is very important that you take Viread exactly as it was prescribed to you from your doctor.  Do not modify the dose without talking to a healthcare professional.  Take each dose with a full glass of water, with or without food.

Do not miss a dose of Viread as this can cause drug resistance.  This can make Viread less effective against HIV.  If you have missed a dose then take that missed dose right away, unless it is time for your next dose.  Then you can just skip the missed dose and take your next dose.  Do not double the dose without talking to your doctor.
