Safety Information


A condition called lactic acidosis can happen while taking Viread.  Symptoms of this condition are: unusual muscle and stomach pain, weakness, trouble breathing, uneven or fast heartbeat, nausea and vomiting, numbness in arms or legs.  Contact a doctor immediately if you experience these symptoms.  

Severe liver problems have also been reported with the use of Viread.  Get medical attention if you develop the following symptoms: nausea, stomach pain, no appetite, fever, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice.

Viread Side Effects


Stop using Viread and get emergency medical help if you develop an allergic reaction.  Symptoms of this include: hives, difficulty breathing, swelling in the face, tongue, throat.

You should contact your doctor and stop taking Viread if you develop any of the following serious side effects:

  • Less urination then usual, not uriniating at all
  • Fever and flu symptoms, mouth sores
  • Increased thirst and urination, loss of appetite
  • Weakness, constipation, nausea and stomach pain
  • Jaundice

  • Continue to take Viread and contact your doctor if you experience any of the following less serious side effects:

Mild nausea with vomiting, diarrhea, gas
Insomnia
Skin rash
Headache, depression
Redistribution of body fat

Viread Contraindications


Many of the following drugs can cause kidney damage if used with Viread.  Inform your doctor before takeing the following drugs:

  • Didanosine
  • Atazanavir
  • Lopinavir
  • Ritonavir
  • Pentamiine
  • Tacrolimus
  • Amphotericin B
  • Capreomycin, rifampin, vancomycin
  • Acyclovir, adefovir, cidofovir, foscarnet, ganciclovir
  • Aspin, ibuprofen, diclofenac, naproxen, piroxicam, etodolac
  • Aldesleukin, carmustine, cisplatin, ifosfamide, oxaliplatin
